Compare value by portion

Compare two prices using the same portion unit: ounces, pieces or servings.

Use the same unit for both quantities. A lower unit price does not guarantee a larger or more suitable meal.

Compare the same unit

Divide each price by its quantity, using the same unit on both sides. Ounces must be compared with ounces, pieces with equivalent pieces, and published servings with comparable servings. Convert units before entering the numbers.

A package can have the lower unit price while costing more overall. Quality, portion size, waste and the amount you actually want still matter. Comparing pizza slices only works if those slices represent comparable portions.

A practical example

At the example prices, $5 for 8 units is $0.625 per unit and $7 for 12 is about $0.583. Option B costs 6.7% less per unit, but requires a $7 purchase.
